The Rubber Duck is a Nominee for the 2013 National Toy Hall of Fame!

The Rubber Duck is a Nominee for the 2013 National Toy Hall of FameFinally! The Rubber Duck is a Nominee for the 2013 National Toy Hall of Fame ! Wouldn’t you think the rubber duck would have been a shoe-in the first year the Hall of Fame started?

GO VOTE!

Since 1998 fifty-one toys have been inducted. Seriously, shouldn’t the rubber duckie have been given the honor before Nintendo Game Boy, the Game of Life, and (much as we love him) Mr. Potato Head?

The teddy bear, bal,l and bicycle have had the honor, where’s the rubber duckie? A glaring omission!

The classic toys of the National Toy Hall of Fame sit alongside, and complement, the collections of The Strong’s National Museum of Play, which holds the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of dolls, toys, games, and other materials related to play.

To date, 51 toys have been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. The most recent honorees are Dominoes and Star Wars Action Figures. View examples of these and other inductees by browsing the Online Collections. Or read the biographies of all these classic icons of play as described by The Strong’s curators.

I have to admit, as a kid who played in boxes I do understand their inclusion as an inductee. Part of the parameters for deciding which toys get in is that they have “inspired creative play.” Yup, cardboard boxes.

Which brings me back to rubber duckies.  Everyone had one as a kid. Everyone has a place in their heart for them. They are ageless. And judging by the dozens and dozens of companies making them and the scores and scores of different rubber duckie characters made today, rubber ducks are more popular than ever!

So let’s make sure the rubber duckie gets its proper place in the National Toy Hall of Fame.

GO VOTE!

(But don’t you dare vote for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or this crowd and their friends will overtake your bathroom. Beware the bubbles!)
