It simply isn’t right! It was just a few months ago that I discovered the National Toy Museum and their Toy Hall of Fame. I was astonished to find that the rubber duckie wasn’t among the toys chosen.
Among the first inductees in 1998, the inaugural year for the Hall of Fame, was the teddy bear. Certainly a no-brainer, but wouldn’t the rubber duckie be an obvious choice? Isn’t it unconscionable that the teddy bear has the honor and not the equally-loved rubber duckie?
Worse yet, fifty-one toys have been inducted over the years. Still no rubber duckie.
This year, the rubber duck has finally been nominated. Which has me all a-bubble! Finally, the rubber duckie is in a position to be recognized with this rightful honor!
But not so fast. The Museum is running an online poll in which visitors to their site can vote for their favorite among the list of the 12 toys nominated this year. Voting was but a trickle at first. Then, as the numbers picked up I became alarmd that the rubber duck was registering in the low single digits while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were running at over 20%. As a horsewoman I can give a little slack in the rein to My Little Pony getting that kind of support, but a turtle?
As present-day rubber duck tycoon Craig Wolfe of Celebriducks says, “Rubber ducks are an American icon, a symbol of childhood. Everyone had one as a kid, everyone loves them.”
Vote for Rubber Duckie! A One-Woman Campaign
And so I have launched Vote for Rubber Duckie! A One-Woman Campaign to get the vote out; to right this wrong (I’m sure it’s simply an oversight.) I’m monitoring and reporting the poll standings daily via social media.
Each day I publish pictures of rubber duckies from my collection encouraging people to vote.
A series of Vine videos featuring my hand drawn rubber duckie characters in stop motion videos plead their case.
You Can Help: Vote for Rubber Duckie!
